Direct Current (DC) railways date back to 1840’s and now make up 50% of the surburban electrified rail networks in Australia and 100% of the light Rail networks. Australian DC railways began in 1919 using 1,500 V DC. The largest infrastructure projects in Australia, Sydney Metro and Melbourne Metro are to be electrified with DC power supply.

Light Rail networks operate at 600 to 750V DC and exist in seven cities/towns in Australia. Many early tram systems that were removed are now making a rapid comeback as a solution to environmentally friendly transport. Melbourne having kept it’s original tram network now stands at 24 routes covering 250 km and is the largest in the world.

Railways are very complex systems to design. The electrical loads are also complex and continually varying both in magnitude and position on the system. When you add in safety factors that the public are exposed to the electrical system particularly for light rail systems running through the street plus unwanted side effects of DC stray current there are many things to consider.

The numerous interfaces and very strict safety criteria applied to engineering of DC railways also make it a very interesting and
challenging subject to learn that brings fulfillment to your job.

Seminar Overview

This two-day seminar provides attendees with a good appreciation of the systems and technical aspects associated with designing and understanding DC Railway Power Supplies. It is ideally suited to meet the learning requirements of those who are new to DC railway traction supply design, or those who have minimal or limited knowledge of the systems. The course not only covers the key concepts and principles in this domain, but also makes reference to applicable national and international standards and practices. The key topics of safety, earthing and bonding design form a part of the course.

About the Seminar Leader

Our seminar leader is Technical Director for Railway power supplies at an international engineering consulting company. He obtained his Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the UK in 1992 and started work at Alstom Instrument Transformers Testing High Voltage and High Current Transformers for use on electricity grids. He advanced to be manager of the three HV Laboratories offering test and calibration up to 900kV and 24000Amps with measuring accuracy of up to 6ppm. In 1995 having rebuilt the three test facilities, he became Senior Design Engineer at Alstom designing Instrument Transformers up to 525kV and 24000Amps. This included design of voltage transformers, current transformers, Interposing transformers, Reactors, HV capacitors, and busbars. In 1999 he moved on to delivering turn-key High Voltage Substations within Substation Projects Division of Alstom.

He started in railways in 2000 when he led a team to design, build & Install fourteen traction substations, to convert the then busiest railway line in Europe from a classic system to a high power 50kV Auto Transformer system to accommodate faster, high power tilting trains. During this time he invented a novel High-Voltage cable connection system to connect to standard HV switchgear eliminating the cable basements on substations.

In 2006 he joined the consultancy engineering business as a Technical Director for Electrical and Plant – leading many high profile projects on the Railways across UK and Ireland soon becoming a lead person for Traction Power and associated Earthing and bonding. He has held several high-profile roles such as Traction Power Manager at Crossrail in London during the design and development phase.

He came to Australia in 2012 and has continued working in engineering consultancy providing technical lead and review roles for design of many heavy rail, light rail power systems, Earthing and Bonding in Australia, Malaysia, Canada, USA, UK and Hong Kong. He has 30 years’ experience in the field and has provided many training sessions alongside mentoring to others in the field of Traction Power Supplies and Earthing and Bonding on the railways. He is a member of Engineers Australia and the IET.
