GRID INTEGRATION OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS (WIND & SOLAR)
Date: 29-31 May 2023, 1pm-6pm AEST
Delivery: Online Seminar (Live Streamed via ZOOM)
Overview
There has been an ever increasing global interest in integrating renewable generation (especially wind and solar) into power systems at both transmission and distribution levels to meet the continuously increasing demand for electrical energy.
The aim of this seminar is to provide delegates with an appreciation of the technical and regulatory aspects associated with the integration of renewable energy resources, including, but not limited to; Types of renewable energy technologies and their current worldwide installation status; Types of grid interface; Renewable systems configurations; Integration impacts on transmission and distribution system operation; Ancillary services and grid support control strategies; How to handle uncertainty in intermittent renewable resources (probabilistic and forecasting models); Interconnection requirements and grid codes; Modelling and simulation of renewable energy systems. Moreover, case studies will be presented to demonstrate the issues being discussed.
Why Should You Attend?
This seminar is aimed at engineers, engineering team leaders and managers who are interested in or need to broaden their understanding of the issues involved with Renewable Energy Systems. A step by step approach to knowledge build-up will be taken but tertiary education in electrical engineering (or similar science based disciplines) is recommended. After this two-day seminar the participants will become more conversant in the topic of Renewable Energy Systems and better equipped to plan, build and manage future projects!
Benefits
This seminar will broaden participants’ knowledge and understanding in relation to :
- The principles of operations of various renewable technologies
- Technical issues and barriers associated with the integration of renewable energy resources
- How to handle generation variability of wind and photovoltaic resources
- How to plan and operate transmission and distribution networks with intermittent renewable generation
- An awareness of the relevant standards and grid codes recommendations
- Case studies and computer modelling and simulations

About the Seminar Leader
Our seminar leader received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University Of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, in 2008 where he also worked as a Research Associate. In 2008, he joined CanmetENERGY, Natural Resources Canada, as a Transmission and Distribution Research Engineer where he managed multiple research, development, and demonstration level projects related to the integration of renewable and distributed energy resources into transmission, distribution, and remote/isolated grids. In 2010, he was appointed as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Waterloo, where he co-supervised graduate students’ research activities and served as an examiner for multiple graduate students. In 2014, he was promoted to Smart Microgrids Research Manager at CanmetENERGY, Natural Resources Canada.
In January 2015, he joined Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, UAE, as an Assistant Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, where he currently holds the position of Associate Professor. He is a member of the Khalifa University, Advanced Power and Energy Center (APEC). He is also an IEEE senior member since 2016 and currently serving as an Associate Editor for IEEE Access Transaction and IET Renewable Power Generation.
Our seminar leader has more than 20 years of research and project management experience in the area of integrating high penetration levels of renewable energy resources and electrical energy storage systems to utility grids that includes, modelling and simulation of power systems, smart grids and microgrids, distribution system planning and operation, modeling and forecasting intermittent renewable resources (wind and solar photovoltaic power). He also has more than 10 years of experience in supervising research activities for postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, MSc students, academic and industrial researchers.
