Introduction
This two-day technical seminar introduces mechanical aspects of transmission line design. The seminar is suitable for engineers and technical officers involved in design of transmission lines, and those considering a career in transmission lines. Attending project and construction managers involved in transmission line projects will gain an understanding of issues related to the mechanical aspects of transmission lines.
The seminar will primarily concentrate on HV transmission lines (110-500kV), however, most aspect of the seminar are applicable to distribution lines. While the seminar will introduce and discuss transmission line structures and foundations, the seminar primarily deals with the mechanics of overhead conductors.
Who Should Attend?
The seminar introduces mechanical aspects and considerations related to transmission line design.
The seminar would ideally suit:
- Engineers and Technical Officers new to the transmission line design discipline requiring exposure to the variety of design aspects associated with mechanical/structural design of transmission lines.
- Project Managers or Engineers from other design disciplines looking for technical exposure to this topic from a basic to intermediate level.
- Managers tasked with leading design teams and require exposure to the portfolio of activities undertaken by layout and structural designers for the line design process.

About the Seminar Leader
Our seminar leader has worked in the electricity industry for over 40 years. From 1992 his main focus was transmission line design. He retired from Powerlink Queensland in May 2025 where he held the position of Principal Engineer Civil/Structural in Transmission Line Design.
He was involved in development of several Australian Standards and Guidelines including standards related to overhead lines. He was involved in development of all revisions of AS/NZS 7000 – Overhead Line Design and its predecessor c(b)1 guidelines.
During his career, he developed and maintained many software tools related to conductor mechanics, structural and foundation design.
In his role of Principal Engineer, he was responsible for development design and construction specifications for transmission lines, representing Powerlink in the related industry forums including CIGRE B2, development courses for various stakeholders in Powerlink and resolving difficult technical issues.
