    Introduction

This two-day technical seminar introduces and demonstrates key concepts for the electrical design of overhead transmission lines. The seminar is particularly suited to those presently working or even thinking of a future career in the planning, design, construction, project management, operation, or maintenance of overhead transmission lines. Seminar participants will gain:

    • an introduction to electrical line design concepts
    • exposure to basic to intermediate design examples
    • practical applications of a design process.

The seminar focuses on the design of high voltage (HV)and extra-high voltage (EHV) transmission lines, a critical component of the power system transformation underway in many parts of the world, and in Australia with transmission lines up to 500 kV.

Whilst the seminar focuses primarily on electrical design aspects, it also highlights several key interfaces to other design disciplines including electro-mechanical considerations, structural design interfaces, and line layout (tower spotting) considerations.

    Who Should Attend?

The seminar broadly introduces the key considerations and a process for electrical design of transmission lines.

    The seminar would ideally suit:

    • Engineers new to the transmission line design discipline requiring exposure to the wide variety of design aspects associated with electrical design of transmission lines.
    • Project Managers or Engineers from other design disciplines looking for technical exposure to this topic from a basic to intermediate level.
    • Managers tasked with leading design teams and require exposure to the portfolio of activities undertaken by electrical designers for the line design process.

      About the Seminar Leader

Our seminar leader has worked in the Queensland Electricity Supply Industry for 30 years. In this time, he has held roles in the planning, high voltage testing, design, construction management and procurement for overhead and underground transmission lines in Queensland ranging from 66 kV to 500 kV.

He is currently Powerlink Queensland’s Principal Engineer for Transmission Lines and Cables. He presently leads the development and application of standards for HV and EHV overhead and underground cables at Powerlink, the transmission network service provider in Queensland, Australia. This includes developing and managing a large portfolio of technical specifications and supplier technical qualification for supply and erection of transmission line materials including conductors, OHEW, OPGW, insulators and other transmission line support hardware.

He is currently the convenor of the Australian Standards EL-10 Overhead Lines Committee whose portfolio covers the maintenance and refinement of key industry standards in Australia for conductors, insulators, hardware, and transmission line aerial marking requirements. He has also participated in key industry developments as a working group member for both AS/NZS 7000 and the ENA EMF Working Group tasked with reviewing and publishing the ENA EMF Handbook in 2016. He is an active member of the CIGRE B2 Overhead Lines Australian Committee and is a Fellow of Engineers Australia.
