Seminar Overview
This course covers the major decisions required in the design of a high voltage transmission, distribution and/or private substations, with a focus on conventional outdoor and indoor substations and equipment.
Substation design involves establishing a reliable and efficient electrical infrastructure for power transformation, distribution, and protection.
With a focus on the emerging use of various forms of gas-insulated, vacuum interrupter and modular switchgear. Content covers the development of economic layouts and taking advantage of the facilities now available, interfacing with the latest equipment and secondary control systems. The emphasis, however, will be on developing economic network substations using separate switchgear, current transformers, voltage transformers and busbars in outdoor and indoor configurations.
Many people in different technical disciplines such as Civil, Structural, Primary and Secondary Systems including protection will contribute to the final design, and of course this module cannot cover them all.
As described in the title “Introduction to Substation Design”, this 2-day seminar will cover most of the important aspects of indoor and outdoor high voltage substation planning and design including the following basic topics:
- Types of Substations
- Purposes, requirements, planning and establishment of a substation
- Site selection, system and customer requirements
- Substation plant configuration, single line diagrams, electrical layouts and arrangements
- Substation major equipment selection considerations
- Insulation coordination
- Earthing and Lightning Protection
- Environmental Considerations
- Testing and commissioning
Various practical examples, exercises and experiences will be presented demonstrating certain principles of design

About the Seminar Leader
Our course leader is currently a Director and Technical Principal at MKD Consulting Pty Ltd). He is a recognized specialist in Substation Design, Insulation Co-ordination and Earthing of Power Systems, both in Australia and internationally. He provides post-graduate professional development training on topics associated with power systems, with specific reference to Substation Design.
With over 40 years working experience in the electricity transmission and distribution industries, he has personally investigated and managed the risks associated with substation design, insulation co-ordination, earthing, lightning protection and interference. He has been involved in design, mitigation and implementation of insulation co-ordination schemes associated with Australia’s electricity transmission and distribution networks. He has held various responsible positions in the Electrical Engineering discipline, consulting, design, project management, maintenance of power systems and has a special interest in studies for network connections, insulation co-ordination, power system augmentations, detail design, layout and refurbishments, covering primary, secondary and protection systems.
He has worked on projects for the power generation, transmission, distribution, traction, mining and heavy industries in a variety of commercial project and design management roles, with primary responsibility for substation design, installation and commissioning and has practical knowledge and experience working with LV, HV to EHV systems, renewables and switchgear systems, with extensive experience in electrical substation design, protection systems, HV cabling designs, transformers, NER/X’s, capacitor banks and reactors, PLC’s, frequency drives and large motor control systems. He is a Member of the Institute of Engineers Australia, a Chartered Professional Engineer, a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland. He holds a Master of Engineering Science (Power Supply Engineering).
