    Seminar Overview

Lightning is a common and significant cause of outages on most power systems. Mitigation of the effects of lightning is often not well understood and can often be improved. This seminar is designed to provide a background in lightning protection for those people responsible for the reliability of power distribution and transmission systems as well as substations. This seminar places great emphasis on assisting attendees with an understanding of the key principles and concepts regarding lightning protection of power systems. The seminar will also include constant references to international best practice, as articulated in the relevant Standards, e.g., IEEE 1243, IEEE 1410, IEEE 998 and AS/NZ 1768.

    Who Should Attend?

This 2-day seminar will present a practical approach to lightning protection and is intended for managers and engineers concerned with the design of new lines and substations and with implementing appropriate measures to improve the lightning performance of existing lines and substations. It will be of considerable value to engineers and technicians involved in the operation of power systems during thunderstorms. The seminar will also be of interest to non-specialist engineers and graduate students who would benefit from an introduction to lightning and lightning protection. No prior knowledge is assumed.

Note: Participants may be required to work illustrative examples during the seminar and therefore should bring a scientific calculator to the seminar.

      About the Seminar Leader

Our seminar leader received his Ph.D. in experimental physics from the University of Tasmania, Australia, in 1996, he spent the early part of his career in university teaching and research. In 1997, he moved into the private sector and worked on many aspects of lightning protection and earthing, from research to products and applications, both in Australia and the United States. In 2007, he set up an engineering consulting company providing independent consultancy services on lightning protection and earthing projects for a wide range of clients globally. In June 2013, the company merged with Lightning Protection International Pty Ltd where it continues to provide independent consultancy services in lightning protection and earthing.

Our seminar leader has delivered many seminars and presentations on lightning protection and earthing within Australia and overseas and has published more than 85 technical papers. He is a member of IEEE and IEAust and a contributor to Standards and code-setting committees in Australia, Europe and the United States.
