    Introduction

In an ideal electrical power network, electrical power is expected to be delivered with:

    • A purely sinusoidal voltage of constant nominal magnitude
    • The three phase voltages at identical magnitudes and identical phase-phase angles, and
    • The load currents aligned with the respective voltages – that is with purely active power load
    • However, this is rarely the case in reality. Electrical power networks often experience problems with voltage magnitude fluctuations, harmonics, unbalance between the three phase voltages, and reactive power.

Power Quality is an electrical engineering field which looks at causes, effects, and remedies associated with these issues. Power quality studies aim to:

    • Determine the effect the customer loads have on the supply grid, and
    • Ensure that the customer load network connection does not negatively impact the grid network

The Power Quality Studies typically focus on: Reactive power, Harmonics, Unbalance and Flicker.

The power quality studies are therefore a critical part of the negotiations between the customer and the grid authority and are typically conducted whenever a new connection is established, or when an existing connection is augmented.

    Seminar Objectives

This seminar delivers an understanding of:

    • High Voltage networks and their topologies
    • Power network components and how to model them for power quality studies
    • Reactive power
    • Harmonics
    • Load and consequently Voltage unbalance
    • Flicker
    • Traditional and modern technologies for alleviating Power Quality issues, including Scott Transformer, Static VAR Compensator / STATCOM, Rail Power Conditioner and Static Frequency Converter.

Our seminar leader received his MSc from the University of Belgrade, Serbia in 1995, and his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia in 2020. He has been a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland since 2004.

Between 1995 and 2000 he was with Energoprojekt, Belgrade, Serbia, working on Transmission and Distribution Substation projects in Nigeria and Botswana. From 2001 to 2002, he worked for UGL, Sydney, on water treatment plant electrical networks, DC railways and Transmission Substation upgrades. Between 2002 and 2006 he was with Power Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia, working in Transmission Protection and Automation. From 2006 to 2008 he was with WorleyParsons, Brisbane, working in the Oil field and on QLD and NSW Distribution Network upgrades. Between 2008 and 2019 he was with Queensland Rail and Aurizon, Brisbane, working on major Traction Power Network upgrade programs within the Queensland passenger and heavy haul railway networks. Between 2019 and 2022, he was with Arcadis in Brisbane as Technical Director, working in the rail, renewables, transmission and distribution, and oil and gas sectors. Since 2023, he has been with Incite Energy, as Technical Director, leading the Australian east coast engineering effort.

In 2020, he completed his PhD in the field of Traction Power Network analysis. He has conducted significant research and has published numerous papers in the areas of Protection, FACTS and large-scale Battery systems for Traction Power Networks. As a member of IEEE, Igor has reviewed many IEEE conference and journal papers in the Power Systems field. He has delivered numerous training courses in Power Systems Protection.
